Materials and tolerances

The grade you specify is the grade that ships, with certificates. Tolerance is quoted against production capability, not sample capability.

Aluminium and stainless work

Material choice is rarely the cheapest decision on a drawing, but it is usually the one that decides whether the part works. We buy to the grade named on the drawing and issue the certificate with the parts, traceable to the heat number.

If you want an equivalent rather than the exact grade, that is a conversation before the material is ordered — not a substitution made quietly in the saw shop.

Material familyGrades we run regularlyNotes
Nickel & high-temperature alloysInconel 718 · 625 · MP35NWork-hardening grades. Low surface speeds, rigid setups, held to size by high-accuracy turning.
Beryllium copperC17200Non-magnetic and high-strength, common in sensor, instrument and downhole parts.
Carbon & alloy steel1045 · 4140 · 42CrMo · 20CrMnTi · 40CrThe workhorse family. Good machinability, responds well to hardening and grinding.
Stainless steel303 · 304 · 316L · 17-4PH · 420 · 440CShafts, sleeves and parts in corrosive or hygienic environments.
Aluminium6061-T6 · 7075-T6 · 2024 · castingsLightweight structural and housing parts. Machines fast, needs care on thin walls.
Brass & copperH62 · C3604 · OFHC copperBearings, bushings, electrical and thermal parts.
Tool & hardened steelH13 · SKD11 · D2 · S136Moulds, dies and punches, usually finished by EDM and grinding.
Magnesium & titaniumAZ31 · Ti-6Al-4VWeight-critical and high-performance parts, quoted case by case.
Engineering plasticsPEEK · POM · PPS · Nylon · PTFEMachined plastic parts where metal is not the right answer.
Castings & forgingsAluminium and iron castings · steel forgingsWe machine and finish supplied castings and forgings.

On tolerance: we deliberately do not publish a table.

A single figure per process describes a shop's best case, not your part. What is achievable depends on the feature, the material, the hardness, the batch size and how the part is fixtured. We quote against what we can hold repeatably on your drawing — and we say so at quotation stage if a feature is outside that.

Finish and treatment

What happens after the cut.

Finishes we arrange

  • Anodising, natural and hard
  • Passivation and pickling
  • Blackening and phosphating
  • Zinc and nickel plating
  • Bead blasting and tumbling
  • Laser marking

Treatments we arrange

  • Through hardening and tempering
  • Case hardening
  • Nitriding
  • Stress relieving
  • Cryogenic treatment
  • Induction hardening

Finish and treatment are quoted as steps with their own lead time, so the delivery date you receive includes them.

Send us a drawing. Get an engineering answer, not a price list.

Tell us the part, the material and the quantity. An engineer reviews your drawing and replies within one working day — usually with a suggestion on how to make it cheaper.
